Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Most fifth graders HATE reading. At my high-poverty urban elementary, most students openly admit to not reading at home. I teach fifth grade to bilingual and inclusion students: some are monolingual English, some are bilingual English/Spanish speakers, and some have special needs ranging from dyslexia to bipolar disorder and ADHD. Our students are high-need, high-poverty, and have little parental involvement. There is high mobility at our school, and more than one student has been to more than a dozen different schools by the time they arrived in my classroom.

Given all these obstacles, I'm proud to say that every year my students LOVE to read. Although there are moments of literary discovery all year long, nothing hooks them like "The Lightning Thief" - the first book in a series of five novels written by fellow Texan (and former teacher) Rick Riordan. "The Lightning Thief" tells the tale of a troubled sixth grader with dyslexia and ADHD who finds himself followed by monsters. The series is all about Greek mythology, and in the last two years I have taught this book, my students have shown a voracious interest in learning about mythology and making connections to Greek references in our modern lives.

I have compiled a small collection of resources to help my students better understand Greek mythology: comic books, webquests about mythological monsters, and plays that we perform in front of the whole school. But there a few resources that I lack which would truly bring the story alive to my students. First and foremost, I'd like to end the battles for my few classroom copies by having a class set of the novel so that students can follow along as I read aloud in class, and take their copy home at night. Secondly, for the students who wish to continue reading the novels in the series, I'd like to have a set of the four other books in the series. Finally, I'd like the students to be able to reenact some of the book's events by supplying them with a once-in-a-lifetime experience learning archery and swordfighting (with SAFE fencing equipment, of course!). Many of my students are at high-risk of dropping out school, where they wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to learn these elite sports. "The Lightning Thief" describes these sports in context, in a way that is understandable and fascinating to them, and giving them the chance to actually try out these sports would be extraordinary.

Your help will give my students a remarkable opportunity to truly dive into another world via literature. Please help them get a glance of the Greek culture that inspired so many things in our modern world!
