HELP! We're trapped in a 4th grade classroom without dictionaries! My 4th graders are economically challenged and cannot purchase all of the supplies they need for Reading and Writing Workshop.

When students are writing, they should have a vocabulary that will provide for clear communication of their ideas and thoughts. They need to adjust their vocabulary according to the audience. But, my students’ knowledge of words is extremely limited. I have also observed that the vocabulary that students encounter often prevents them from comprehending what they read. Many students state that the unfamiliar vocabulary keeps them from understanding the material they read. In spite of their skill in using context clues, word meanings too often just cannot be ascertained.

Dictionaries would answer that frequently asked question, “What does that word mean?” Research has shown that students can improve their language skills more efficiently if they use a dictionary.

PLEASE make it possible for my students to improve their reading and writing skills with a class set of dictionaries.
