My students are, freshman, enrolled in a Southern Connecticut high school. Our school is a large public school, with nearly 2700 students. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with many of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the Southern Connecticut.
The students I am primarily involved with, are extremely creative and have varying levels of independence, many of whom are on the spectrum.
They all have a thirst for knowledge, wanting to expand their horizons. Everyday is a chance to learn something new and everyday we strive to make sure that students feel important, supported, challenged and included within the larger school community.
My Project
The materials requested here are utilized on a daily basis with any and all activities in my classroom. Using the printed materials for whole group instruction through interactive notebooks, engaged students throughout the learning process. By using different colors for those handout and notebook pages students are excited by learning.
By providing students with the materials they need to be successful, they take greater pride in the work they are doing.
Therefore, their academic work enhances their ability to focus and be more attentive in class. Pride will also allow the students to maintain a healthy mind, a healthy body and a healthy soul.
Students are able to avoid spreading germs within the classroom, because I insist that they continuously wash their hands and use the hand sanitizers after using the bathroom, sneezing, coughing and blowing their nose.
Part of my curriculum, includes Activities of Daily living, providing students the opportunity to learn how to live independently, encompassing skills such as laundry, creating job resumes and preparing simple healthy meals. With the addition of a refrigerator, students will able to plan meals around what is available to them, offering a wider variety of opportunities.
In feeling their best, and support with all their basic needs, students are more willing to to take chances, a leap of faith when participating in classroom discussions, sharing of ideas and creative suggestions as well as creative opinions.
