Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a unique elementary school set in the middle of Compton. We have the highest Hispanic population in the district with 100% of our students qualifying free lunches.

Over the past seventeen years, our school was in danger of being closed down several times due to low test scores and not enough funding from the district to make our bungalow style classrooms into actual buildings.

Our school was awarded the National Blue Ribbon School in 2014, as well as a California Distinguished school during the 2014 school year. We were one of three schools in Compton to be awarded the Apple Grant.

The fifth graders are an exceptional group of students, who are slowly transitioning to a middle school atmosphere. I have approximately thirty-three students, five who have learning disabilities, and one with autism. Routines, structure, and consistency are key to making the day.

My Project

Implementing flexible seating has really made an impact on the fifth graders becoming more independent and make better choices. The scholars love the option of choosing from a tall stool and standing table, a yoga ball, a cushioned chair , bean bag or a couch. However, the furniture that I have purchased has taken a beating and some of the seating options need to be replaced by a comfy couch and some lap desk.

The ability to choose where they sit for the day has given the students the opportunity to take responsibility for their learning.

Not only have they learned that choosing a group that focuses on working can be more effective than choosing a seat near their friends. They are learning independent skills that are needed for higher level education. My hope is for all of my scholars to become
