It's Alive!: Animals in the Classroom

My students need an Amphibian Starter Habitat with 2 Newts, a Hissing Cockroach Habitat, a butterfly garden, as well as books to further research the animals they are observing.

My Students

Caring for a pet is a great experience for any child, and the benefits are multiplied tenfold when higher order learning is involved. My students need living science materials that will engage and excite them in our classroom.

My students are an enthusiastic, caring group of third graders who love to learn.

We are at a Florida school in an area with a growing number of students facing poverty. However, because we are not a Title 1 school, we do not receive the additional funding that other schools with similar demographics are afforded. My classroom encompasses a wide range of ability levels, all of which are passionate about learning.

My Project

I want to give my students every opportunity to learn and grow, and this will really aide in that process. We will conduct all kinds of investigations, including studying the life cycles of a butterfly and a ladybug, and comparing and contrasting a newt and a frog. Students will be able to reflect on their learning not only through journaling and recording their observations, but also by holding meaningful conversations about the life processes around them. In order to make this happen we need habitats, photo books, grow kits and other resources.

I have watched children as they interact with animals, and I am almost always amazed by the compassion I see in them.

I am confident that this will be an experience my students will never forget, and will inspire them to continue their search for knowledge in the future.
