Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom serves 7-12 grade students ages 14-22 with multiple special needs. The students are hard working and bright from a variety of ethnic, economic and family backgrounds. They are bussed from many surrounding cities and towns in two different states because local programs could not provide for their unique combinations of special needs. Most of the students are wheelchair users, many are hearing and/or visually impaired and all have some level of communication impairment.
Like all schools ours is underfunded; beyond that, special needs equipment for such high need students is very expensive, leaving little to no money in the budget for curricular materials like books, manipulatives, lab supplies or instructional technology. Our students need very specialized instruction with high quality materials by highly trained individuals to succeed. Success after my classroom, "in the real world", relies on the students' ability to communicate and their ability to manage independently in the world. Time and money are two areas that special needs students traditionally do not succeed in after finishing public education.
Given the proper curricular materials, such as the Edmark Time Telling curriculum and the Touch Money program the students in our class will have a much greater chance at mastering the skills they need for successful independence after special education.
With your help and donation of these curricular materials you will be improving the independence and quality of life of a wonderful bunch of young people I am privileged to teach. Thank you.
