Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a public preschool that serves children with developmental delays and autism. We are in one of the most diverse school districts in the nation, with immigrants and refugees from around the world. Diversity truly is our strength!
My students are beautiful, living proof of the power of early intervention.
These three, four and five year olds begin our program at varying levels of cognitive and social development. Some are learning how to communicate with words or visuals. Some are learning how to regulate their emotions. Each one is part of a caring community where we learn together through collaborative play and hands-on lessons. Everyone contributes and everyone belongs!
My Project
You're never too young to be curious about this big world of ours and what better tour guide for a preschooler than that beloved character, Clifford, the Big Red Dog? This magazine from Scholastic is made for preschoolers, with articles and activities focused around seasonal themes. It's so well done that I'm actually adjusting my curriculum so that it will align with each issue.
I can't wait to put copies in envelopes addressed to each one of my kids, so they can have the anticipation and excitement of opening each new issue.
I plan on making this subscription a big deal. I want them to know that it's something special, for someone special. How wonderful to have your very own copy of something so interesting? How awesome to be able to look at a photo for as long as you need and want? (A photograph of a chick coming out of an egg deserves quite a close study, don't you think?)
I'm equally excited for them to bring their copies home and extend their learning with their families. So many families want to be involved with what their children are learning, but aren’t sure how to start or deepen a conversation. It can be hard for children, as well. This will be a perfect tool for that. The subscription even includes online access to extended activities.
