My first-grade students live in a rural community in Idaho. We are a Title I school; a large portion of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. My first graders are full of wonder.
My students are so excited to come to school to learn and make friends in a safe and loving environment.
Every morning we gather together in a class meeting where we welcome each other by name and participate in a class activity or game. One of their favorite activities is to play snowball. In this activity, the kids write their name on a piece of paper, then wad it up and throw the snowballs until the bell rings. Then they find a snowball, read the name, and with a smile and a handshake, they greet their friend and welcome them to class. I love how this activity helps my students meet and make new friends while boosting their self-confidence.
My Project
I can't tell you how lucky I am to work with creative and dedicated teachers. This year we want to celebrate all the hard work our amazing first graders have done this year. We are going to celebrate 100 and 101 days of school this year in style. I will start the celebration on the 100th day of school with decorations and banners and plenty of center activities. The kids will have counted to 100 so many times they will be dreaming about it in their sleep. The next day we will continue the celebration with 101st day of school.
We are going to transform our rooms into a scene from 101 Dalmatians.
Of course, the kids need to look the part with shirts that will have black spots, Dalmatian dog ears and tails. We will need table clothes and various backdrops to set the tone for the day. I can't wait to be part of this fabulous day.
