My Students

I teach seventh-grade science in a rural school. Our community is very diverse with many cultures represented.

Over eighty percent of our children qualify and receive free or reduced-price lunch, which means many of our children live in poverty.

We are also experiencing a growing number of families that are homeless. Even though our children come from many disadvantaged homes, they come to school happy and so excited to learn. They know that they will leave with new knowledge every day.

My Project

I have been able to hatch eggs in my classroom for many years because of the generosity of DonorsChoose. Unfortunately we are in need of a new incubator. We have hatched chickens, a quail and a duck. Our duck, Tweety, even made the papers and is now living at our local zoo. Hatching eggs is such a wonderful hands-on experience for our children. They are able to use the scientific process of making a hypothesis, observing, recording data and then learning how to care for the animal. The children also learn how to be responsible in that we make sure the animals we hatch go to a proper home. A new incubator will help our children to continue to have this wonderful experience.
