iTeach with Technology

My students need an iPad to increase learning and create projects in all subject areas. They also need a cover to protect it, and a stylus to write explanations.

My Students

Technology opens doors to students, just as books do. However, some of my students don't have access at home to the technologies many of us have come to accept. Access at school is limited, and currently, my classroom has one iPad. It is well appreciated, but does not go far among so many students.

My students are a very diverse group in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race, learning needs, and personality.

Some are enthusiastic, active learners who reach for everything I can offer. Some are more reluctant learners, and I try hard to find ways to also engage them actively. Some have lives that center around survival, and their energy is spent outside of school, with little brainpower left for learning when they get to school each day. Yet my job is to teach all of these students. Using technology is one way of meeting these diverse needs.

My Project

My students would love to have another iPad available so that this tool is accessible to more students each day. Currently they use the iPad for a wide variety of tasks. Students write explanations of math problem solving strategies on the iPad and project them on our SmartBoard for other students to discuss. There are many math apps that support developing understanding of the concepts students are learning. When looking up words for poems students are writing, the iPad is a quick dictionary or thesaurus. Students can create books from their writing that can be shared on the iPad bookshelf with other classes. They also take videos and create movie trailers to present the learning they are doing to others. Commercially made videos on social studies or science content can be streamed on the iPad about specific topics related to an individual project. The uses are endless and limited only by student access to the technology.

Based on their current access to the iPad, my students are beginning to see the capabilities (even more than I do at times!) and are using it as a tool for their learning.

The technology is a draw for students who don't have ready outside access, engaging them in their learning more easily. Ready access at school also serves as an equalizer for those who are not as privileged. My students and I would very much appreciate having access to a second iPad in our classroom.
