My students reflect the cultural richness of New York City - and they speak 34 different languages among them!
Our school is an academically rigorous, tuition-free high school and college associate's degree program.
Many of my students are the first in their families to attend college. They are very eager for the opportunity to earn two years of free college tuition at the time of their high school graduation.
It is incredibly rewarding to work with such curious, eager and motivated students.
My Project
This past year, the Fairy Tale course collaborated with the library on a special project. It went so well, we want to repeat it! Students selected books of fairy tales and folk tales from all over the world, and wrote research papers about them.
They also created a Fairy Tale Symposium Day presentation that included such inventive presentations as "The Seven Shades of Snow White." They created beautiful original artwork, and did a dramatic reading of folk tales dressed as mermaids and fairies.
I am requesting a combination of scholarly texts, art supplies, and a changeable art display frame where art can easily be switched in and out as students create new work. The artwork will be displayed in the library, to celebrate the Fairy Tale class's work for posterity.
These books and supplies will prepare us for next semester's course and presentation on Symposium Day. Our library collection is currently missing books from Italy and Morocco. We're also eager for a critical text about the subversive aspects of fairy tales. Thank you for helping us broaden and expand the diversity of our world cultures in the library!
