As soon as the opening bell rings every morning, many of my students flock to the band room so that they can participate in extra practice before school. They range from nine to eleven years old and they are quite eager to advance through increasingly difficult music. Enrollment in band has expanded by 55% since I arrived in Fall 2016.
Our school provides instruments to over half of our students.
These students typically come from the neighborhood where our school is located, which includes areas of low-income housing. Many of these students thrive, in part, because of their membership in band.
My Project
We have limited funding for band instrument repairs. Patching old instruments together, paired with increasing enrollment, leads to a shrinking stock of instruments that we can put in the hands of our young musicians.
Joining band should be a right, not a privilege.
We are seeking to purchase a Gemeinhardt 2SP Series Student Flute, which has been considered the standard for beginning flutes for decades. This instrument will be loaned to one economically disadvantaged student each year.
Sports teams perform better when their players are healthy; our band will perform better when we have a quality inventory of instruments to offer underprivileged students.
