My Students are capable of at least twice as much as they believe they are capable of, and I want to give them the tools to accomplish everything they can.
My students typically come to me with the mindset that science is not for them.
Sometimes they feel science is too hard, or too boring, or they will just never understand science. I try and use as many hands on activities and games as possible in order to get them passionate about the learning. Many of my students are minorities and/or from underprivileged homes. Oftentimes they don't have someone to support them in completing their homework, or can't obtain supplies they need for class. Most of our learning needs to occur in the classroom, because that is where I have the most control over their choices. They are a great group of kids who just need extra support. They would love to have supplies to complete labs instead of having to just take notes or do worksheets.
My Project
My students need atom models to use hands on experience to explore atomic structure including protons, neutrons in the nucleus, and electrons in the electron cloud.
They need molecular models to use hands on experience to see how atoms combine to create molecules.
They will also be able to count atoms in chemical formulas using subscripts and coefficients, and explore how the law of conservation of mass shows that matter is not created or destroyed it just rearranges. They need aprons to do labs with chemicals to explore evidence that chemical reactions have occurred and to practice proper lab safety procedures.
