My students need a Morning Meeting rug. We gather together every morning to greet each other and shake hands. We recite a poem together, and work on our multiplication facts.
Our school is a wonderful, diverse elementary school. We have students in grades K-5 from many different backgrounds, religions, and cultures.
My students are a diverse group of 4th graders who unfortunately are part of a huge achievement and socio-economic gap.
We have many families who have two parents and a middle income lifestyle, and many children whose families are struggling to get by financially. My students come together every day in my classroom, and we enjoy listening to me read them books, learning about fractions, and playing tag.
Our school enjoys activities that bring us together as a community, and foster relationships among teachers, students, and parents. Our parents are looking for ways to interact with their children with reading and literacy, as well as with the classroom teachers. We struggle with available funds for programs that do this, in addition to transportation related costs as well. We can't offer many enrichment activities for students who are excelling, and we have very little to offer the children outside of the school day.
My Project
My classroom engages in a Responsive Classroom Morning Meeting everyday. It is an excellent way to start the day, and gives students the opportunity to greet each other and share their news. We learn to shake hands correctly, and encourage eye contact and appropriate responses. We discuss issues or events that may be upcoming in our school or community.
Morning Meeting starts our day off with an amazing tone.
We also use the time to work on fluency, as we read a poem together on the easel. We practice our multiplication facts and we also use the rug during story time. The rug is a central place in our classroom where we gather several times a day. Unfortunately, our current one is falling apart and very well worn, and we are in desperate need of a new one.
