Island Insights: Hands-On Learning with Ecosystem-Inspired Walking Sticks

My Project

I love how curious, creative, and collaborative my students are. They thrive when given the opportunity to engage in hands-on, real-world learning, and they’re especially inspired by experiences that connect them to nature. Our students are part of our high school’s academy program, which culminates each year in a transformative learning retreat on Hurricane Island, Maine.

This year, students will explore the island's unique ecosystems in small groups, diving deep into the natural world around them.

They’ll take what they learn and design walking sticks that artistically represent the ecosystems they studied—incorporating color, texture, and symbolism inspired by the plants, animals, and environmental features they observe. These sticks will become not only artistic expressions, but also tools to help tell the story of their learning.

The materials funded by this project — such as wood burning tools, wire, paracords, polaroid film, journals — will give students the ability to thoughtfully plan, design, and create their walking sticks. These resources will help them bring their ideas to life and share their knowledge in a creative, meaningful way with their peers and the island staff. Your support will help make this memorable and empowering project possible.
