This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is a small environment with a maximum of 15 students to a class in an alternative school setting. We work to help students who are behind in their high school credits so they may still earn a high school diploma with their cohort.
In our alternative high school, we work to instill a love for reading in our reluctant readers through high-interest books.
We have a free reading time where students get a break from the curriculum reading and they are able to choose novels to read that are specific to their interests. My students often tell me that they hate to read, but I have seen that change once they find a book that draws them in.
My Project
Year after year, I have seen even the most reluctant readers fall in love with reading, when they’re able to find the perfect book for them. The "perfect" book may be different for each student, but the overall theme is that they find something in which they can personally relate. I have made it my mission to create a classroom library that represents the diversity of the students in my classroom, and I have gotten positive feedback from my students as a result. Word spreads quickly among the students about which books are the best, and before I know it, they are begging to check out the books from my classroom library for nightly and weekend reading. After fulfilling this order, I would have enough books to allow students to check out my books weekly, while still having enough copies remaining on my shelves for students who wish to read in class.
These books will allow me to reach more of my students who need to find books they can relate to, that will get them excited to read, and will also promote diversity and inclusion in my classroom.
