I am a speech therapist in a lower elementary school in rural southeast Louisiana. I am trying to build a library of books written for children about children with disabilities for every classroom on my campus (30). I would like to help encourage acceptance for children with different abilities. Our campus currently has two preschool classes for children with different abilities. These classes include children with Down syndrome, hearing impairments, orthopedic impairments, and developmental delays. The school (population of about 500) where I work has pre-k through second grade and these children will be a part of our campus and a part of our community for their entire lives. Early childhood is the time to introduce acceptance that will hopefully last a lifetime. The book I would like to purchase is about two friends, Charlie and Isabelle who are friends who play together, laugh together, and cry together when they forget to share. One has Down syndrome, but they both are just preschoolers doing preschool things. Stories like this help very young children begin to develop acceptance and understanding for children who may not look or act like them. What a wonderful idea to plant in young minds...acceptance, tolerance, and understanding. I can't think of anything more important to be teaching our children.
