Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

The instruments I am requesting will help jumpstart the band program at our school. We are a Title 1 school in south Brooklyn with a student population of 320 students. It is my first year at the school and I would like to start a band program for next year. I hope to have multiple concerts and performances throughout the school year as well as band-focused trips.

My goal is to give my students a unique experience that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Band builds important skills and mindsets that students need to function in today's society. Confidence, responsibility, and time management are some skills that students can learn from the band. In addition, the band can be an outlet where students can express themselves and help relieve their stress. When I was in a band growing up, I loved the camaraderie and sense of community. With a band program in my school, I hope to create that same kind of relationship and sense of community in my school.

What makes my students special is their tenacity and spirit. From my first year here, the students have shown me that they are interested in learning instruments. Students who I don't have during the week come to me interested in learning an instrument. I hope that I can turn these students' interests into a successful band program.
