Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Physics is an unexplored and unfunded program at our school and resources are unavailable. Consequently, the students’ motivation and engagement are constantly challenged.

The students in my physics class are composed of 11th and 12th graders and they are committed to completing high school.

We are a Title 1 public school with a very diverse population of students. My classroom has Latinos from Mexico and Central America, Korean, Armenian, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Vietnamese and Russian. Ninety percent of all the students are first generation Americans where their parents have immigrated to this country. They are all wonderful students struggling to keep their grade point averages up so that attending university can be a possibility in their future. As their teacher, I am proud of their accomplishments and always wish that I could do more for them.

My Project

Our school has a large population of 3000 students. We have the students but not the resources for physics lab equipment and classroom. Typically, I construct labs using items that I can get at Home Depot and Big 5 Sporting. We were able to order inclined planes this year but that is only one experiment. My goal is to introduce the basic ideas of physics with current technology. Ultimately, we hope to create a physics space where the size of student lab groups can be less than 8 and more effective. If there is one experiment or one topic that can suddenly capture the attention of a student, then hopefully, that student will consider a direction of engineering or science, whether the direction takes them to a university or professional school. Since we are learning electromagnetism and thermodynamics this semester, I created a series of five projects in order to gather equipment that is relative to future class experiments.

My classes have 28-32 students.

This project has enough equipment for 2 groups of 4 students. I am new to teaching and new to this process so I am trying to plan for the minimum needed that will maximize the lab benefit. The students are intrigued at the prospect of using new lab equipment. For the students, self-discovery through experimentation is invaluable. With the kindness of donors like you, public education has the chance of offering opportunities to students that can motivate and engage
