My students need five garden trowels, two garden spades, 10 garden gloves, two garden thermometers, three garden blades, and four soil sampling kits to help them begin work in their school garden.

A typical day in my classroom is never without inquiry, laughter, student discussion, and shine! To some the classroom may look chaotic; I like to call it organized chaos. My scholars always know exactly what they should be doing; they just choose to do it laying on the carpet or walking around.
My scholars are inquisitive, curious, and on their way to becoming deep critical thinkers.
Our school is located in a predominately African-American, low-income neighborhood, and many of my students are facing circumstances beyond their control. While my students may have limited access to materials and resources at home, they do not have limited passion or energy for earth science. They show up daily ready to learn and explore the content. They enjoy hands-on inquiry projects that allow them to explore, question, and challenge the norm. They are not afraid to think outside the box, defend an unpopular opinion, or disagree with a fellow scholar. My scholars never waste a moment and are not afraid to challenge themselves as well as challenge their classmates. Science concepts can be difficult for some students to understand. However, our family like atmosphere makes it possible for every student to question without ridicule.
My students need five garden trowels, two garden spades, 10 garden gloves, two garden thermometers, three garden blades, and four soil sampling kits to help them begin work in their school garden. Our school's small class size allow for endless creativity, discussion, and hands-on activities. Assignments are differentiated to ensure that every student is able to attain the information at a level that is the most beneficial to them.
The materials purchased for the class will allow scholars the opportunity to experience the joy of gardening.
Scholars will use the materials purchased to develop, tend to, and cultivate a school garden. It will quickly become more than a school garden as students will also develop collaboration skills, math skills, and inquiry skills as they use their garden to study the water cycle, soil erosion, plant life, and other concepts.
With your help, you are not only helping to fund a school garden, but fund a learning experience. Our garden will serve as a way to explore the world around us through observations, questions, and connections.
My purpose is to provide engaging and challenging activities for my scholars to help them become critical thinkers and productive citizens in their community. I am not interested in a teacher-centered classroom. The donations to this project will allow me to continuously move toward a student-centered classroom that encourages hands-on active learning. With the supplies, my students will take the reins to facilitate their own learning and enhance their learning of science concepts.
