Is a Tomato a Fruit or a Vegetable?

My students need gardening tools, seeds and potting soil to begin a community vegetable and herb garden in the center courtyard of our high school, which is currently weed-infested, overgrown and ignored by everyone.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students have taught me to cook a "bangin' Arroz con Gandules" using combinations of cilantro and other herbs. Wouldn't it be wonderful if they could grow their own vegetables and herbs right outside the classroom and use them in all the foods we prepare in my five Foods classes? Especially since I am teaching in an inner-city high school with mostly Hispanic students who don't have the luxury of a backyard where they can grow their own fresh vegetables. Most of my students have no idea what vegetables are! And they certainly don't include them in their diet on a regular basis. Perhaps if they had a hand in growing them, maybe they would be willing to eat them. I think it's worth a try.

All my classes are full with waiting lists - probably because they get free food in my room. But they also have to work when they are in there, and they end up having fun and learning a lot, too.

My students need gardening tools, seeds and potting soil to begin a community vegetable and herb garden in the center courtyard of our high school, which is currently weed-infested, overgrown and ignored by everyone. In addition to some basic gardening tools, potting soil and seeds, we just need some good laborers - and I think I have those in my classroom already. I am hoping we can grow 5 kinds of vegetables and 5 kinds of herbs.

In the afternoon, the sun shines brightly into my classroom. It would make the perfect spot for you to help brighten the diets and enlighten the minds of my students with something so magical as seeing a seed grow, literally and figuratively.
