iRead with an iPod

My students need 4 Sansa Blue 2GB MP3 players to download audio books.

It's time to beat my students at their own game! My third grade class doesn't know what is about to hit them. I have 19 wonderful students who are in need of enrichment. I teach a group that has been labeled as low income "average" students. They are far from average thinkers, but they are in need enriching experiences to help push them to a higher level.

As teachers, one of the challenges we face in the classroom is meeting the needs of the 21st Century student. Today there are many things vying for the attention of our students. Children are spending their time playing computer or video games, watching television, or listening to blaring music on their mp3 players for countless hours. No longer are the days when outdoor time, physical activity, or curling up with a good book are valued. Research shows that 79% of American children play computer or video games on a regular basis. Children between the ages of 7 and 17, play an average of 8 hours of video and/or computer games a week. With their time consumed with this and other activities, precious time that should be devoted to reading is lost.

I believe that reading is the core skill to all other academic areas. The key to creating a good reader is to first get the students interested in reading. Sometimes, students are interested in books, but they are above their reading level. Students then give up feeling that they “can’t read that book”. My solution is to provide students with an opportunity to experience the magic of a good book that they are unable to read independently. I have decided to try and beat them at their own game by incorporating one of the things they love, mp3 players, into reading. I propose to do this by purchasing four mp3 players, portable listening devices, on which to download stories. Students will have the opportunity to check out a book along with the audio version on an mp3 player. They will be able to listen to the books during designated times in class and have the option to take them home. Struggling readers will be able to challenge themselves to read books above their independent reading level. Students will also be able to read a text aloud and download it onto the mp3 player. At home, parents will have the ability to listen to their child read for fluency and monitor their progress.

You have the power to help be the difference. As teachers we are constantly battling new technologies. You can help put some of that technology to strategically benefit students and get them EXCITED about reading! Thank you for all of your support of our classroom!
