My students come from a wide array of demographic backgrounds. They are students at a charter school in Hillyard which happens to be one of the poorest neighborhoods in Washington. This group specifically has a very wide range of academic ability as well. We have middle schoolers whom are excelling and working on high school level work, and then we have some students reading at the 2nd grade level.
Regardless of their backgrounds, these students are some of the more loving and selfless students I have ever taught.
They have built a special bond with their classmates and through this bond have created a family. By building this family atmosphere, it allows for a successful and competitive environment. Students hold each other to high expectations and want the best for one another. Experiencing with these students has been such a blessing, because it has shown me that no matter where you come from, you can always come together, form a community, and change the world.
My Project
Students have unique and specific ways of learning. When reading students don't only learn by reading silently to themselves, but by reading together out loud and by listening and following along. By having audio books and the chance to listen to the book they are reading while they follow along, students are able to improve their fluency, word recognition, and comprehension.
Audiobooks on iPods are important tools for students to utilize to increase their success as readers and writers.
By having iPods, groups of students (specifically my struggling readers) can be off reading a book by themselves and not feel lost or frustrated while reading. It will also allow students a chance to build their confidence and word recognition.
As a third year teacher working at an emerging charter school I am not able to afford such technology. Please help my students become the best they can be!
