My Students
"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his needs, is good for him." -Maya Angelou
Learning to read allows students to access vital information in academia and their surrounding environment. However, learning to love to read guarantees a lifetime of learning.
Our school is unique in that it truly reflects the diversity of our community.
In our inclusive setting, we have students of various abilities, modalities, and strengths. Our classrooms and instructional choices need to match our students' dynamic needs so that together we continue to learn and thrive. First grade lays the foundation for reading skills. With foundational skills set, first grade is where students can truly begin to build a love for reading. Providing a literacy rich classroom with multiple opportunities and forms of reading each day, will aid in providing readers of every ability and modality the chance to fall in love with a good book. Because we do serve students with various needs, we have to provide multiple ways to access curriculum that provide opportunities for independence. Technology is a great way to match both of these requirements. We already use iPads for many of our students with special needs, so including technology in reading is a natural progression.
My Project
Having a center with iPod Nanos will give striving readers the chance to have auditory input (audiobook on Nano) as well as a visual input (text). This allows the student to have more independence from the supports of the teacher and staff. Striving readers or students with special needs can use the Nanos to read with increased independence from adults. I can also use the Nanos to extend the curriculum and challenge advanced readers with comprehension questions or projects related to the audiobooks. This allows me to offer students individualized instruction in a more in a manageable format. We will also use the Nanos during readers workshop for small groups. Additionally, we will use them to access research materials for various projects throughout the year. Nanos can also be used as incentive for students. The possibilities for a listening center using Nanos are truly endless.
Having audiobooks on the Nanos is the cost-effective way to give every student access to unlimited titles in the classroom.
It also gives me a manageable way to individualize reading to match each student's instructional needs in a high-interest manner. My students with special needs will gain more independence as readers, as they do not require the support of a teacher to access the audiobooks and information. I can also use this center to challenge students and extend curricula for students.
