Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We are a Title I free lunch eligible school in NYC serving an international population of first generation Americans. We have many different languages spoken in our school and our high-needs community looks to education for the success of its children. Our fifth grade students are motivated but need 21st century resources to compete with more affluent communities. Using the public library by downloading books for FREE would send a powerful message about the resources available to them, but they need the latest in tech (the iPod) to download these books.

Doesn't everyone already have an iPod? Alas, not our students, and it would be wonderful to show them the possibilities of this powerful digital tool by making use of reading resources available through our public libraries for free! Just think of how we could model educational use of digital devices in the classroom to prepare our students to avail themselves of the library's reading materials. Imagine the choices they could make from science, history, biographies, classic literature -- all in eBook format online.

Students often need to be shown the possibilities and resources available to them, and in this economic climate, the availability of free eBooks for download is incredible. If we show our children that they merit the use of 21st century digital devices to further their education, they'll get the message that they are deserving regardless of financial constraints. In a time of economic frugality, the public libraries are more relevant than ever, and they are providing the digital resources to support our students. Now what we need are the devices for the students to access those terrific eBooks in every subject. The iPod can be a great influence in the democratization of education when put in the hands of all children to promote reading.

iPods are cool -- but very expensive and beyond the financial reach of our students. I hope to give my fifth grade students an opportunity to use iPods to bolster reading and get them in the habit of using public library resources that are digital. What better way to make reading a priority than to bring it to children in a relevant format that sends the message that reading is cool -- iPod therefore iRead!! We hope Donors Choose supporters agree and thank them for the opportunity to give all students the very best to enhance the learning environment for 21st century skills.
