Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Has your computer or Internet service gone out recently? How did you feel? Life is increasingly linked to computers and Internet access. Now think about what it might be like to grow up without a computer or access to the Internet at home. This is the challenge many of my students face each day!
Our school is a tapestry of diversity with students hailing from 42 different countries and speaking 22 different languages at home.
The majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch and live in neighborhood apartments. As a neighborhood school and through our International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme Mission, our school functions beyond the traditional norm. We are a community hub that brings together parents, students, teachers, and neighbors. With many newcomers and students/families who are new to the English language, our school works hard to find innovative ways to educate, empower, and welcome these new families. The phrase "digital divide" could not be more accurate when describing our school population. Our informal research shows than less than 50% of our families have access to a computer. Even fewer have broadband Internet access. As new immigrants who may lack ability or confidence in English, community options like the public library can be daunting.
My Project
The wealth of high quality educational materials (often free!) available online is greatly out of reach for so many of our students. In other parts of town, computer and broadband access is taken for granted. While almost unbelievable in our technology-infused age, some of our students may have never seen a computer until coming to school. For others, school may be their only access. The situation is growing more critical as education budgets shrink yet the need to provide students quality interaction with technology increases. I need an iPad2 so we can access our district's web and iPad resources and reduce the impact of the digital divide!
Our school district has so many resources available online for our students. Online programs exist for every subject and every topic. The potential is truly unlimited but only when students have the hardware (an iPad2) to access it. With this iPad2 I can also allow students to borrow it on the weekends or during school vacations!
As a donor YOU have the power to bring quality educational programs and resources to a LARGE NUMBER of students.
Your donation will help DEVASTATE THE DIGITAL DIVIDE that is plaguing an otherwise vibrant, flourishing, and happy school community! You will show these great students that the larger community cares about their education and is willing to put them on a level playing field when it comes to access to technology. Your donation is an investment with a great potential for high return!
