My Students

As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty, Title I school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep my students engaged with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

My students are creative, eager to learn, and inspired to read, and they love positive attention.

From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly impact their experiences during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful their learning will continue on a path of academic excellence.

The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. My classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The typical students I work with read and comprehend at levels from K through 4th grade. This adversely affects their academic success across all content areas.

My Project

These iPads will have many uses in our classroom. During literacy stations, students will have access to various leveled reading materials as well as be able to listen to audio books. They will video document their responses through graphic organizers and use numerous apps, videos, and websites to engage their learning experiences. This will build their self-confidence while they are practicing the skills needed individually. This will ensure they are provided the individualized instruction based on their independent levels and needs.

Introducing technology to students, integrating it into the core curriculum, and allowing them to be creative and have choice is essential; this teaches students that they are active participants in their education.

We need four iPad minis, protective cases and headphones. These resources will allow students to extend their learning beyond the walls of this classroom. Reading is a vital skill that will impact these students for the rest of their life. My goal is to increase their reading abilities and comprehension levels to make a lasting impact on them. Technology enhances learning and engages students!

By donating to this project, you will provide students with supported education, remediation, collaborative learning, engagement, problem solving skills, and the motivation to learn. Personally, as an educator, I feel there isn't a monetary value that can be placed on a child's education. Please help me bring this project to life!
