My students are amazing, highly involved, and motivated kids that deserve the best education despite their rural location. If they are in my classes then they have chosen to challenge themselves with learning upper-level science content that will benefit them as they continue their education after high school. Many are considering careers in health sciences, engineering, and the hard sciences. They are involved and successful in as many school activities as possible, and therefore, have talents in many areas.
One of the things I absolutely love about my students is their love for learning and for science.
Many of my students are involved in our science club, and their motivation in class is very high because they are able to apply many of the concepts to science competitions the club attends. My classroom is very student-centered and I spend most of my time just facilitating the students to discover and learn together. A classroom with lots of hands-on learning is key to allowing my students to learn content at a deeper level.
Each of my students are issued a Chromebook for school. However, Chromebooks lack much of the creating abilities that are available with tablets. While the school has a set of iPads, these limited devices are shared among the entire school and must be taken back to the library at the end of each class. Additionally, putting specific applications onto the devices for my class is troublesome as all the teachers in the school try to do the same.
With these devices, creating videos, podcasts, taking pictures, completing QR trails, and using virtual and augmented reality applications will be much easier.
My students will have more resources to explore science topics, and creativity with projects will be of much higher quality. Finally, my students won't have to share with the rest of the school. They will have their own devices to use specifically for our science purposes.
