Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from all over the world, but every one of them comes into the classroom with a unique set of experiences and a wonderful desire to learn. Whenever it's time to go home, my students say, "I don't want to leave. I love school!"
The students in my classroom primarily come from immigrant families that have moved to the United States in the past ten years.
Many were born in the US, but have grown up speaking their parents' native languages and celebrating their parents' cultures. Some who were born in other countries have experienced the terror of oppressive regimes, and the life within a refugee camp. Others simply moved with their families who were seeking better opportunities and education for their children. Each of my students brings with them a joy for learning and a sense of innocence and wonder that is amazing to witness in the classroom, especially considering some of the things they have been through. Our school as a whole is halfway filled with English Language Learners, which means the teachers are always trying to find ways to support our students who come from so many different countries.
My Project
The iPads that I am requesting for the classroom will be able to support my students' learning in so many different ways. There are a variety of literacy based applications and websites that allow students to read books at their reading level, practice uppercase and lowercase letter formation, enjoy listening to stories to build language fluency, and develop phonological and phonemic awareness through phonics games and activities. There are also myriad math activities that can support students to practice addition and subtraction skills, count to 100 (and beyond!), learn how to solve story problems and develop the number sense that will support them as they begin to learn about more abstract math concepts in future grades. Students will also be able to use websites like National Geographic to support our science units on animals and plants.
This project will support my students by ensuring that they get the opportunity to become familiar with the technology that would not be available to them otherwise, but which is becoming so prevalent and important in schools.
They will learn how to use this technology as a resource for learning, and will develop the skills to support further uses of this technology in the future!
