My Students

"What kind of activities or research are we going to do today, Mrs. Chatham?" My students ask me this each time they are in my class. I have to explain that of course I have something engaging for them to do on the computer but they would have to take turns or group up. They groan!

My students are in the Talent Development Program that I teach at one of my schools which prepares them for Gifted Screening so that they can be identified as Gifted.

A lot of the Gifted skills that they are required to know and learn to increase their chances of being identified are enhanced by technology. Advanced Research, Advanced Communication, High Order Thinking Skills are the focus of their learning. Technological resources are a main source of their research and they communicate with other students and communicate their ideas. They also create projects using technology such as animation, Power Points, videos, and other on-line resources to show what they know to support their creative learning. They participate in Web Quests to support their Higher Order Thinking Skills. Having 5 desktop computers in the classroom limits what they can do because they are often spending learning time waiting for a computer or they do not get the full engagement due to having to share

My Project

With the iPads, there is less waste of learning time and engagement. The kids are afforded more time to enhance their learning and increase their chances of being identified as Gifted. My students would use the iPads for Advanced Research, Creative project and presentation activities, Web quests for Higher Order Thinking Skills, and communication with other learning as well as their peers.

There are higher standards for being identified as Gifted and Talented.

My students NEED these resources to enhance their skills so that they can do well on the assessments used to identify them as Gifted. They deserve the chance to have the most materials available to help them achieve that their status in such a rewarding program.
