Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My teaching philosophy is grounded in the idea that students' minds are not empty vessels waiting to be filled. Each one of them brings their own particular brand of genius to my classroom, and my most important job is to discover and empower that genius.
My 40 kids are from all over the world- Puerto Rico, Somali, Myanmar, Nepal.
They are multilingual and bring a wealth of knowledge and experiences to our classroom. But in order for them to become what they want to be- scientists, teachers, firefighters, and even President- they must master English and maintain their native language/s.
My kids are poets, dancers, refugees, athletes, bookworms, and adventurers. They are kind and lovely and thoughtful. We spend our days working on speaking, listening, read and writing English, but I, unfortunately, do not have the knowledge to foster their growth in their native language/s. The iPad minis will provide them tools to enhance their English and honor their linguistic background through further study.
My Project
There are two dilapidated computers in each of the classrooms I serve. My students are expected to develop 21st-century skills without access to 21st-century tools. The iPad minis will allow translanguaging in real time, targeted small group instruction, maintenance of their native language/s, and independent exploration of academic topics.
My students and their families are discriminated against because of their skin color, religion, poverty, and the languages they speak.
They are in desperate need of a trajectory change. An excellent education is their best chance.
I cannot provide them the support in their native language/s that has been proven crucial for multilingual learners- but these iPad minis can help fill that gap
