As the art teacher, I am privileged to see every single student enrolled in my school. They all work with computers in other subjects to find information, take tests, or play educational games; however, I want to help every one of my students discover that they can use technology to create.
My students are eager artists, designers, and architects from diverse backgrounds.
When I enter their classrooms, their faces light up. Not just because they enjoy art class with me, but because they have been waiting all week to get to work on their projects.
Our school has a high poverty population, so we all work together to excite and inspire our students to succeed. Teachers and administrators celebrate students' achievements in the arts as well as their academic successes. They help put on our school's annual art show and come out to see students' artworks at local art exhibitions.
Because the technology situation at our school does not allow for it, my students do not have access to computers and laptops during art class. iPads for use only in art class will allow them to experiment with the digital artistic media used by today's creative professionals.
My Project
A small sample of what students will accomplish with iPads:
•Photography: use the camera to tell personal stories through photos they manipulate using photo editing applications
•IMotion: collaborate in writing, producing, and directing stop-motion animation films, animating objects to tell their stories
•Green Screen: incorporate play into art making by constructing puppets, and recording performances using green screen technology
•Toondoo: delve into comic strip illustration, character development, and story writing encouraging experimentation and originality
•InspirARTion: examine art of other cultures and learn about radial symmetry, while using specialized tools to create digital mandalas
•Let’s Create Pottery: explore the ceramics process from pottery wheel to kiln firing
•Sumo Paint: learn to paint digitally, work in layers, transform shapes, zoom in to see detail, quickly correct mistakes
•Artsonia: select and upload images of their work to this online museum just for students
By fifth grade, I want students to be comfortable using sophisticated digital applications as artistic media.
Through iPad functions and downloaded applications, students will learn to digitally draw, paint, illustrate, animate, manipulate, collaborate, research, record, and display artistic works. Using iPads, they will discover new and engaging ways to tell their stories and to communicate their ideas.
