My students are learning to persevere through challenges in their classroom math lessons and in their math interventions with me.
I am a math interventionist in an urban, high poverty elementary school.
I teach students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade in a small group, for 30 minutes, 4 days a week. The students I work with are at least 2 years behind in meeting grade level math standards. They are learning to make sense of a variety of math concepts through modeling, using visuals, using manipulatives, and playing math games.
My Project
Students will use the iPad minis to practice math skills that we have worked on in small group. While I work diligently to provide an engaging lesson for my students, it is hard to compete with a math app on the iPad. Students will use a variety of apps to practice fluency and maintenance on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. They will also be able to access digital manipulatives as a tool for solving problems. The digital manipulatives allow for more teaching time because it eliminates times spent passing things out and cleaning them up.
My students are struggling to make sense of math.
Having iPad minis in the classroom will help with student engagement and will allow students to access difficult concepts in a game environment. The iPad minis will also keep students using technology and give them another tool to use in the classroom to show and share their thinking.
