"Schools have a responsibility to expose students to things they don't yet know they love." -Gary Stager.
Student ownership and leadership is a driving force in our daily operations.
Students are well aware that their voice is valued and are willing to work to make things happen. Their requests within the last year have considered and prioritized with a plan to accomplish their goals.
Our elementary school is located in a small rural county. We are a Title I school with many of our students never having traveled beyond our county lines, and even fewer across state lines. Their exposure to the larger world is very limited. Our school has a strong sense of community that can really only be felt and not described, despite our rural, low income status. Students are eager to learn and constantly inspire teachers to take them higher, farther and faster than the day before. My vision for these students is to expose them to the world through the school library. Technology, information, tools & spaces to stretch their mind is key to making this happen!
My Project
A new iPad will make a tremendous difference in our school library experience for students. Our current devices are so outdated, that many of the latest educational apps and devices will no longer work with them. Our students have used iPads regularly in the library on a daily basis, but we have discovered that the majority of our devices are no longer useful. App developers are no longer providing updates, making our devices quickly obsolete.
A new iPad will open new worlds for our students both in and out of the classroom.
Students will use it for student leadership jobs such as photographer and new production crew. They will use it for augmented reality, coding lending robots, and to practice digital citizenship independently. iPads are so versatile that this one tool can provide multiple experiences across the curriculum for our students. How often do you use technology in a day? Our students deserve to be prepared for life beyond the walls of the school--technology is the tool to help them be successful.
