The students in my classroom face challenges every day that I can only imagine. Seven year olds getting themselves up, dressed and making the bus to get to school on time is huge. My students are very independent and to reach them it takes a lot of perseverance knowing they really want to do well.
My students need to be enticed to learn.
Having an iPad in the classroom will be a "magnet" for learning. They attend a public school with limited supplies, no curriculum books available where I need to show academic growth in every student. Over 80% of the class receives free or reduced lunch. Many students have no prior education before coming to school, staying home with their family that does not get them ready for school. School needs to be made fun for these students as the teachers do their best to catch them up to the typical age peer.
My Project
I am requesting an iPad to have the most current technology in my students' hands. The iPad's touchscreen and picture-driven menus make the device appealing to young learners. There are many apps dedicated to the younger crowd, focusing on helping young learners explore key concepts like colors, shapes, numbers and letters. Other apps for young children include interactive books, where children can watch and listen to a picture book as it is read aloud. Some books allow children to virtually turn pages or even interact with the images on the screen.
Students need to be at the center of the classroom, meeting their needs, and doing what it takes to be sure they will be successful in this grade and the years to come.
The iPad will be used to complement instruction, and offer learning opportunities for situations and learning concepts that are impossible to be accessed, observed, or analyzed in a classroom without the assistance of technology.
