Sixth graders are awesome! I have taught sixth grade for over 15 years and am constantly amazed by their ingenuity, creativity, and perseverance. My students love to learn and love a challenge that gets them thinking. Because of their excitement for learning, I am always looking for new ways to teach concepts, integrate technology, and keep them engaged.
I am constantly seeking out tools and techniques to meet individual needs and accommodate my students' varied interests and strengths.
Some have a love of math and thrive in an environment of figuring out complex problems. Others are creative writers who make stories come alive with detailed descriptions and figurative language. Many can tell you facts and details about history that make the past come alive. I want to provide tools to enhance these experiences for all students.
Like all of us, my students also have unique struggles and challenges. Reading does not come easily to some and others may not be able to visualize complex procedures and operations in math. Others may have learning disabilities, difficult personal challenges, or health concerns. Meeting these unique needs is a challenge but is well worth the effort.
My Project
Picture this: Rather than using the traditional spiral notebook or paper/pencil version of our math journal, I create a digital version of every lesson! While presenting the lesson in class, I use the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to project learning objectives, vocabulary and definitions applicable to the lesson, example problems, and other lesson elements. While doing this I capture video and audio of the lesson and class discussion. Then, I post the lesson to our digital classroom wall as a resource for students who need review of the concepts, help with homework, or instruction when they have been absent. It will be amazing and will benefit not only my students but others from my school who have access to the electronic lessons. Thank you for your support!
