A typical day in my classroom goes so quickly. I am with my students for only two and a half hours before they go to their Chinese teacher. I need every moment to count, and I need to keep my students engaged in the learning process. Technology is definitely the way to do that!
My students are busy in the classroom and outside of the classroom.
Most are involved in after school activities. They are good friends with each other since they have been in the same class together for three years. Our school is a newer school, but it is extremely crowded. In the eight years since it has been built, we have had to have boundary changes three times because of over-crowding. With so many students, resources are often not what I would like it to be. We must share any technology that is available with all the classrooms in each grade level and with all the students in the school. I want to give my students access to technology all the time and not just once every week or two.
My Project
Our school received a grant for some programs that can run on iPads or computers. These programs help to advance the skills of students in reading and math. They are adaptive, which will allow the students to work at their own level and pace. Unfortunately, with the limited time available to use the technology in the school, we are not able to use these programs as effectively as I would like. I would like to be able to have a small group of students use the iPad Minis while I am meeting with another small group of students. These students will have the opportunity to work on their math, reading, and spelling each day.
I know that through these adaptive programs my students will be able to better understand the adaptive nature of the testing at the end of the year.
They will perform better knowing the format of the testing that is used. They will also be more engaged in the learning process. Students are so technologically savvy that any resources that we can provide for them to use technology will only help them to enjoy learning.
