"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." ~Charles Caleb Colton
No ones loves to imitate the teacher more than Kindergarten students! I crack up watching them 'play teacher.' It is hilarious, but then I notice how much they actually learn from me!
Watching children act like you really puts into perspective just how much influence you have over their education.
It is a good position to be in. It helps you remember that the 22 inner-city students in front of you are listening to each and every word you say and watching every action you make. It can be intimidating, but then you remember that they need you. They need you to expand their experiences and knowledge base to help them grow. The students in my class love to learn. They also love to teach each other. They also need each other. Due to their varied backgrounds and life experiences they are able share and interact and gain knowledge that no one can predict or plan for to make them successful in life. Just another added bonus of attending school!
My Project
I envision the students using the iPad to imitate the activities we do as a whole class on our classroom iPad. The classroom iPad is used by the teacher to facilitate learning. I know that the students would love to be able to access and enjoy the activities we do as a class in smaller groups or even individually. They would love to chose the videos to watch to practice math and reading skills and to learn about science and social studies. They could access the slide shows we watch to practice letters, beginning sounds, and sight words. There are also apps we use to practice skills such as the free Everyday Math app Monster Squeeze only available on iTunes! Students love playing that game and would play it even more without me if they could! Lastly, it would give us another platform to utilize our online learning software the district has licensed for our use. The students have already been accessing them on our 2 student desktop computers so far.
Students are dying to use the iPad like the teacher!
If we can acquire ones solely for student use they will be so happy to be able to independently access the items we have grown to love learning with as a class.
