This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Many of the students I support struggle each day with reading skills. Reading should not be a dreaded event everyday, but should be a time in which they can find a book that's on their ability level and exciting. I want to help them discover the exciting world that can be opened through books.
The students I teach and support have multiple disabilities, which requires innovative, engaging, and multi-sensory lessons to make advances in the curriculum.
I have worked to create and implement a curriculum that provides all these sensory outlets for my students. Each day the students come in and their day of learning begins. All students receive free breakfast/lunch due to their economic status. My students are with me throughout the day and each activity and lesson is part of their learning. Developing and utilizing engaging materials is critical to keep them engaged and pursuing their dreams. Learning activities are designed with each students' abilities and needs in mind, from the visual supports, behavior token systems, multi-sensory learning activities, our schedule, activities, and community outings all work towards student learning and independence.
Many of the students I support struggle with basic writing skills. After several attempts they may want to give up, due to their difficulty with basic writing skills - spelling, punctuation, and basic grammar.
With this iPad and keyboard case in place, my students will be able to complete their writing assignments in the classroom, developing stories/papers, and sharing them with peers through the tablet.
When they use this technology they will be able to formulate their ideas into a word document to assemble their writing pieces. The built-in features will allow them to correct their spelling, express their true abilities, and show their teachers their true skills.
In completing assignments, they will be able to answer the short answer questions using the word processor/tablet to express their answers. Currently, many of my students do not attempt these or only use one word as their answer because they struggle with the actual writing and organizing their sentences.
If they are able to obtain this technology, the world of writing and written expression will open to them.
