All of my students face the every day challenge of having "autism". They face the daily challenges of communication with their peers and school staff, both expressive/receptive. Some are more verbal, but yet need to express themselves via technology based devices, due to fine motor delays.
My students are boys and girls that have autism.
They are able to attend the public school, but face the daily challenges of communication both expressive/receptive. They are a joy to work with each day, as they master skills that seem so small to you and I, but are huge milestones for them. Being able to express themselves through technology based devices is becoming an easier path for them to be part of inclusion setting with peers within their school setting. Many of the academic requirements are also easier for them using technology vs. written output. Many face fine motor challenges, which limits their ability to produce written work. It is my hope to see less daily stress and frustration to produce academic assignments within the public school setting. With the support of assistive technology, these students will be able to have a chance to learn skills with less frustration and build their self-esteem for a job well done!
My Project
My students should be able to produce the skills they have learned based on their IEP goals and objectives via assistive technology based instruments. We need to build their self-confidence within the public school setting. All my students deserve an alternative method to produce their skills that have been taught on a daily basis. No child should be left behind because they cannot be given the appropriate tools to work with in their school setting. Having them using an Ipad will enable us to assess on a daily basis the progress they are making and the area of weakness that needs to be addressed. Daily assessment of skills is so important to children with autism, as it gives us the information needed to teach them using the correct methodology of prompting hierarchy to master skills. With purchasing the necessary apps, this will enable the students to have a variety of learning tools available to them on a daily basis.
To give all my students a better chance each day to learn and be part of a public school system.
They are all such special individuals that need to be able to acquire skills that will give them a chance as adults to have a job and be a valuable part of our society. I have worked with children that have autism for the past 10 years and feel there is such a need to give these students an alternative method for learning and showing us what they can do, not what they can't!
