I teach visual art in a Title I public high school in the city of Richmond. In our school, we only offer a few elective courses because of underfunding. Visual art gives my teenagers a way of dealing with their feelings and emotions, but it also teaches problem-solving and critical thinking. The kids are facing many obstacles this year and they are doing amazing work! Their joy and humor are getting all of us through this difficult school year.
My Project
My advanced art students are looking towards the future as I prepare them to graduate and aspire to art and design careers. We do not have a computer lab and my students only have Chromebooks for schoolwork. An iPad in the art room will give them access to illustration and digital applications and apps that will give them fluency in skills needed for college and careers. Many of my students are fascinated with animation and gaming and I am committed to increasing access to digital art so my students are able to create the work that makes them proud.
