This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My 6th-grade students are bursting with energy and enthusiasm! They are eager to try new experiences and they jump into any challenge I give them. They love to freestyle, read poetry aloud and discuss engaging ideas. My goal is to build their academic vocabulary, writing skills and reading fluency.
I am searching for ways to turn my students' love of higher-order thinking and speaking into a love of literacy and self-expression.
Their literacy levels range from just beginning to well above grade level.
My Project
I am asking for a square, red Endurance Classroom area rug for my reading corner. This will help designate the space as special and make the room look warmer and more inviting. It is currently all blue and white tile with some gray mats on the floor. I am also asking for three Big Beanbag Seats to give my students a comfortable, inviting space in which to read and collaborate. Research shows that students' brains and bodies benefit when they are able to change levels and positions throughout the day. Sitting someplace comfortable and colorful while reading can help them learn and enjoy while they read. My kids are energetic and enthusiastic, and are at their most engaged when they can move around and change positions once in a while.
Providing my students with a beautiful, comfortable reading corner will be a critical step on their road to literacy.
Thank you in advance for helping me make my classroom warmer, more inviting, and more joyful! I look forward to seeing their faces when we give the room a much needed makeover together.
