Investigating Wilson Bentley's Contribution to Science
Help me give my students access to new technology to encourage online learning opportunities. The Dell Chromebook 3100 will be a great asset to our classroom.
My students are fantastic! They enter the classroom ready to learn about everything! Their faces light up when I mention research projects, science experiments, and books we'll write this year. Their interest in learning everything encourages me to dig deeper to facilitate learning opportunities that will keep them all engaged. They have already embraced some new math and spelling games with smiles. I deliberately left some number cards in a cute little metal can labeled "Trash Can Math" on the counter. I figured they would spot it, and it would stir up a little curiosity and then elicit some questions. I was right! Several students quickly wanted to know what "Trash Can Math" could possibly mean. Playing this game adds a little suspense and excitement to creating numbers, and has become a daily request from my students.
At the end of the day, one of my students spoke up loudly and said, "Mrs. Webb, I love this class so much I wish I could just hide in the closet when school is out.
Then I'd never have to leave!" I laughed, and told him I'm happy he loves to learn, and hope he always feels that way!
My Project
The Chromebook will allow an additional pair of students to research online information about Wilson Bentley's contributions to the scientific understanding of ice crystals. It will also provide access to a website which features his amazing photographs of snowflakes.
Opportunities to conduct online research, coupled with the hands-on investigations of solids, liquids, and gases will provide meaningful opportunities for all my students to learn across the curriculum .
Students will gain the skills necessary to conduct authentic online research as they explore their environment. These activities will foster a greater appreciation of the world of nature and the contributions of others. My students will begin to understand basic scientific principles. Funding this project will facilitate this process and prove invaluable to the future aspirations of my students.
