My students are enthusiastic, inquisitive and perhaps most importantly, they come into the classroom each day with an open mind and keen curiosity to learning. Their energy is contagious and together we work to create a 12th grade English classroom that is student-centered-- one in which students are learning from one another as they prepare for postsecondary education.
Over the past thirteen years of teaching I have come to recognize that project-based learning opportunities create enthusiasm and buy-in from students of all abilities.
Students are able to steer their own learning and discover the power that their voice has when given the chance to investigate topics that are of personal interest to them. These projects require students to utilize online resources to complete assignments. While students work diligently with a limited number of laptops available in the classroom, they often tell me that they have difficulties gaining access to technology at home. Equipping each student with his/her own laptop as they enter the classroom each day would enable students to be more productive with their own explorations and allow them to test the limits to what they think they can achieve!
Chromebook laptops in the English 12 classroom will be an essential tool for students to conduct a 16 week-long research project. Students will be asked to identify an issue affecting their neighborhood and propose a researched solution to City Hall.
My goal by the end of the year is for my students to develop and strengthen the skills necessary to affect change in their community and the world at large as active citizens.
To meet this end, students are practicing critical listening, thinking, and writing skills as they research their neighborhood, identify an issue they would like to address, and creating and presenting a proposal to elected officials. Ultimately my goal is for students to become active participants and agents of change in their neighborhoods and in doing so, become more capable academics and scholars.
