Help me give my students these books for our unit on immigration, as we study the reasons why people leave their countries, while also learning current events and history.
My students are from a rural school in Maine and are curious about the world around them. They are interested in the bigger world as a whole, especially out of New England and outside the United States. Many of my students have never left Maine, and while we have some diversity, there is still a lot to discover. Many of my students don't know what it is like to have to move halfway through the school year and have been friends with the same people since kindergarten and have a total of 15 students in their classroom. It is through my novel studies and book studies that I try to teach students about other countries, ethnicities, cultures etc. and through books, we can learn and empathize for others, while also learning what is happening in the world around us. Furthermore, for some, this is their first rudimentary understanding of other cultures and other places.
One fifth grade unit is studying human rights, and we focus on immigration, and why people have to learn their homes, and these books will give students an invaluable understanding of why it happens and how it affects people when they have to leave.
It could be related to natural disasters, job searches, political changes, or war and we study all the different reasons of what would make people leave their homes and what is it like for them when they do- and the hardships they go through, usually from the perspective of children. Furthermore, we bring in geography as we study where many people immigrate. We study how human rights are broken and what we can do as citizens. This ties into our government unit as well, as we talk about the rights of citizens in this country to protest and vote for change.
