This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students live in an urban environment. Many of them do not have the opportunity to see much beyond their own city. My goal is to teach our three and four year old students as much as I can about the world around them.
My classroom is filled with many opportunities for the children to learn through play.
Since the children are so young, we focus on social emotional learning that includes recognizing feelings, how to speak up for themselves and calming down techniques.
Also, my students are being introduced to the alphabet by learning about how their names look and are spelled. For many of the children letters are part of a whole new world; therefore, we use many materials to reinforce the alphabet including having the children sign-in daily.
My Project
All children need a good educational foundation and for my students it will start in my prekindergarten classroom. I have picked some exciting items to introduce my children to the world of technology and the outside world around them.
Most young children's experiences with technology only involves a passive role, these new items will allow them to take on the role of creator.
We can use the microscope to look up close at objects such as tree bark. The coding robot will allow the children an inside glimpse into how technology is created. I have also chosen the Scholastic Book Club newsletter to give the children written exposure to the world around them. It is a bonus that each child receives a copy, this will be sent home so their parents will get a better understanding of what we are doing in the classroom.
