My Students
My students are super inquisitive and hardworking! They are either 9th graders taking Biology or 10th graders taking AP Biology. My school is located in a high-poverty, high-risk area of Southern California. Our student population is about 96% Hispanic/Latino and over 80% participate in the free or reduced-price lunch program. Despite the economic challenges that many of my students face, they are eager to learn and persevere. It is their dream to graduate from high school and be the first in their family to attend college.
My Project
My students are learning about genetics. As part of this unit, they will explore forensics. My students need loading dyes, microtube racks, micropipette tips, and re-usable practice gels. With this lab equipment, my students will practice loading colorful dyes into gels. This activity will prepare them for the real-life experience of loading, running gels, and analyzing the results. By performing these hands-on labs, students will learn how scientists use DNA technology to solve crimes and perform paternity tests.
My students will really benefit from the DNA technology lab supplies.
The knowledge my students gain through this authentic study of genetics will fully prepare them for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers.
