Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My middle school students are eager to find "their" book. When we do an activity each semester in class called a Book Tasting, they excitedly race to the bookshelves to discover something that calls to them before the timer goes off. As they flip through the books in the genre bins they enthusiastically glance at the covers and hope to find something new and relateable. Even my students who self-proclaim that they are not interested in reading fully participate in this activity and ask me for recommendations on a "good book".
51% of our school's students are socioeconomically disadvantaged.
For a majority of my students, their only access to books is through my classroom library. We hope to be able to fill our classroom library with new and engaging books through your donation. The books selected were either personally requested by my students or chosen to reflect our 53% Hispanic or Latino demographic.
My Project
When I started teaching at my school, I inherited a library full of tattered, outdated books. Since then, I have been slowly transforming our classroom library into a collection of new, relateable, and culturally eye-opening novels. My students look to my classroom bookshelves and yearn for inspiration, to travel to another world, or to see a mirror of themselves in a book.
Teachers should fill the hands of students with engaging books that provide them with an opportunity to relate to others, explore issues, and develop their identities through the experience of others.
My project will give students access to engaging and relevant books. Students will use these books weekly, as they are required to read a book of their choice in class and for homework. Through the generous donation of donors, we can help create a lifelong love of reading, allow students to see mirrors of themselves in their independently selected books, and continue to develop crucial comprehension skills, vocabulary, and an awareness of the world around them.
