My Students
My students are resilient, thoughtful, outspoken, and inquisitive. Full of light and talent. They come to school each day with the desire to learn something new and become better communicators of their thoughts and ideas and better individuals in general. As students in a small, all - girls inner city public school in Downtown Brooklyn, they are faced with challenges and limitations placed on them by society as young women. Each day, I am always amazed at how my students overcome those challenges with greater self - confidence, awareness and encouragement. My role as a math teacher in my school is to support my students in understanding that they can do whatever they put their minds to. Beyond that, I am more than a math teacher...I do my part in inspiring my students to do and discover their potentials.
My Project
The STOKED Program is an afterschool program that seeks to expose students from urban schools to action sports. Over the course of 4 years, students build skateboards from scratch, attend different field trips to learn about surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding on the weekends, build a brand and learn how to run a business as well as college readiness support. Because my school is an all - girls school, I am all the more invested in seeing that my students have access to this amazing opportunity.
Constantly, my students are learning how to overcome obstacles as young women of color and aspiring STEAM leaders; STOKED will offer them yet another opportunity for exposure into a sports realm they've not been invited into previously.
