My Project

I am the special education teacher for the entire first-grade in a low-income/high poverty Title I school in Delaware. Our students are faced with many challenges on a daily basis in and out of school. They come to school to work hard in an environment that embraces their learning challenges and helps them succeed.

Throughout the day, I teach our students to become independent thinkers who will do the right thing in challenging situations and persevere through difficulties.

My students support one another, creating an inviting learning community where they feel comfortable taking risks.

As a first grade special education teacher it is my job and passion to use the best and most current researched based teaching practices to help my students learn to read and write. My project is for a professional membership to the International Literacy Association (which includes subscriptions to their professional reading research journals and magazines) which will help me learn best practices and researched strategies to accelerate phonics and reading instruction.
